Review of Happy Hour of the Damned By Mark Henry

From the cover:

Donuts are deadly. One minute you’re getting your binge on, the next, you’re slipping on the box, cracking your skull, and in the weirdest turn of events, rising as a zombie. That’s just for starters. Now, the recently deceased Amanda Feral is trying to make her way through Seattle’s undead scene with style (mortuary-grade makeup, six inch stilettos, bangin’ Balenciaga handbag) while satisfying a craving for decent vodkatinis and the occasional human flesh—Don’t judge. And no, not like chicken.

Navigating a dangerous world of cloud-doped bloodsuckers, reapers, horny and horned devils, celebrity blood donors, and PR-obsessed shapeshifters—not to mention an extremely hot bartender named Ricardo—isn’t easy. And the minute one of Amanda’s undead friends disappears after texting for “help” (the undead—so dramatic!) she knows the afterlife is about to get really ugly.

Something sinister is at hand. Someone or something is hellbent on turning Seattle’s supernatural underworld into a place of true terror. And this time, Amanda may meet a fate a lot worse than donuts…

My Review:

Mark Henry is an amazing writer. This is the first of his books I have read but definitely plan on reading the rest of Amanda Feral's Zombie series.  I highly recommend buying this book in paperback, there are a lot of footnotes that are hilarious and I've heard it gets a little screwy with the ebooks. Now down to business, Amanda Feral finds herself waking up in the middle of a parking lot a zombie and instead of freaking out decides it's time to let loose and live a little. This book is very descriptive with cannabalism which didn't bother me, haven't you ever wondered if we taste like chicken? JK. Amanda finds out really fast that she can no longer enjoy some of her favorite foods like donuts and coffee but at least she can still drink alcohol. I don't want to go into to much detail here and ruin it for anyone else but when she finds out what happens after trying to drink coffee...ouch! That would be a hard one to give up. There's a lot of twists and turns and things said that will have you cringing and then laughing out loud. A funny part that I immediately thought of was her friend Wendy saying lets grab some buckets and gorge on chocolate cake. Nice mental picture there LOL. At some parts I thought, where does he come up with this stuff!? I love a book with a twisted sense of humor so this one was right up my alley. Check it out guys you won't be disappointed!

Mark Henry is an attending Author at AAD 2012 in NOLA and I can't wait to meet him. You can find out more about him here.

Some exciting news I read on his site is Showtime along with Double Feature Films has picked up the option on Happy Hour of the Damned  for a TV series. That would be awesome! I will definitely keep a look out for that one!

  1. I'm not into zombies, but this sounds funny. I love the idea of footnotes and thank goodness she can still drink alcohol!

  3. If you're like me, you've always thought that the hot, flirty action on Sex and the City was missing one essential thing: humans getting eaten by zombies. Finally, someone has breached the gap in that field of entertainment, and his name is Mark Henry.
